What is AEO?
The short answer: the craft of being one of the few names an AI gives when someone asks it a question. The long answer is this chapter — the shift that made the craft necessary, the mechanism behind an AI answer, and what the work actually consists of.

If SEO was the art of being findable in a list, AEO is the art of being quotable in an answer. The list forgave vagueness — a buyer would click through and figure you out. The answer forgives nothing: whatever the machine couldn’t take from your page simply isn’t in it.
