Answer Engine
An answer engine is what you get when a search engine stops handing you a list and starts giving you the answer. You ask a question — out loud or typed, in plain words — and instead of ten blue links to sort through yourself, a single reply comes back, written as if a knowledgeable friend had already done the reading. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI overviews, and the assistants built into phones are all answer engines.
The difference sounds small and is not. A list of links puts you in charge of choosing whose answer to trust; an answer engine makes that choice for you, quietly, behind the scenes. It reads across many sources, decides which ones to believe, and speaks a single reply. Your business might be one of those sources — named, quoted, recommended — or it might be left out of a conversation you never knew was happening.
This is why being 'on the internet' is no longer the same as being found. An answer engine only passes along what it can read clearly and trust. If your hours, your prices, and what you actually do are stated plainly and consistently — on your own site and wherever else you appear — you are easy to include. If they are buried, vague, or contradictory, the engine reaches for someone clearer instead.
For a small business, the answer engine is the new front desk of the internet — the place where a customer's first question gets answered before they ever reach you. You cannot staff it, but you can make sure it has the right information about you. The goal is simple to say and worth the effort: when the machine answers, let it answer in your favour.
