A person asks, and an answer must be given. I watch whose page the machine reaches into for it. AEO makes yours the easiest to lift — the answer already formed, plainly stated, waiting at the threshold. Do that, and you meet them at the moment of asking, even if they never arrive.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO, is the practice of writing and structuring your content so that a machine can extract a clean, direct answer from it. An answer engine — whether it is Google showing a snippet or an assistant like ChatGPT replying in a sentence — is looking for a self-contained response it can present with confidence. AEO is the work of making your pages easy to read that way: question asked, answer given, no digging required.

It helps to hold three ideas apart. Traditional SEO tries to rank your page in a list. AEO tries to make your page the answer that gets extracted and shown. GEO, its close cousin, tries to make an AI cite or recommend you as it composes a longer reply. AEO is the most concrete of the three: it lives at the level of a single, well-formed answer to a specific question.

In practice, AEO rewards a particular shape of writing. Lead with the answer before the context. Phrase headings as the questions people actually type. Keep each answer self-contained, so it makes sense lifted out of the page and set down inside a results box. Structured data and plain FAQ formatting help a machine understand which part of your page is the answer — but the deeper requirement is simply to be clear, correct, and direct.

For a business, AEO is the difference between being on the web and being useful in the moment someone asks. The reward is that your answer — and the trust that comes with giving it — reaches people at the instant of their question, even when they never see your homepage. The risk of ignoring it is quieter: the answer still gets given, just in someone else's words.
